Katie Unruh enlisted into the US Army National Guard (Montana) in October 2000 and was selected to serve in the Active-Duty Guard Reserve (AGR) in March 2002. She initially enlisted as a Chemical Equipment Repair (63J), and shortly after returning from Basic/AIT she mobilized as a Military Police (31B) for the Noble Eagle campaign under Operation Enduring Freedom. Katie was promoted through the enlisted ranks up to SSG (E6).
Katie served in many different Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) in her 21.5 years of service. She was a recruiter (79T) in Havre, MT (2004-06); Missoula, MT (2006-10). She served as Detachment Readiness NCO for Recruit Training Company in Missoula, MT (2010-12). Katie and her family transferred to Minot, ND in 2012 where she served as a Recruiter (79T) (2012-13). Katie served as a Human Resource NCO (42A) S1 HR NCO for the 164 Engineer Battalion in Minot, ND (2013-20). She reclassed to a Supply NCO (92Y) for HHC 164 Engineer Company in Minot, ND (2020-22). In 2022, Katie retired honorably from active service with the Army National Guard.
In 2023, Katie and her family decided to move to Tennessee and became Crossville residents. Katie has been married to Charles Unruh since 2002, and they have two school aged daughters: Kaidence & Chevy.
